As sad as it is, I have lived in Utah for 26 years now, and had never been to the Bingham Copper Mine. It's something that we had talked about doing numerous times, but we have never made the trek out there. So when we found a coupon for free admission, and saw that Eric had a day off, we packed up our little family and off we went.
On the drive out there, Hallie kept asking what a mine was, and we had no good way of explaining it. It was one of those things you just have to experience I guess. It was quite the drive out there, and a rather windy day, but it was a fun outing.

This is how big one of the tires is on one of their haulers! It is massive!
A hauler, with the huge tires.
We then went inside to look at the museum and learn about the mine. The museum itself isn't nearly as impressive as the mine but it was definitely interesting.

Hallie was genuinely curious about it all, and wanted to know about the copper, and how they got it out of the mine, and any question her little mind could come up with. I love her curiosity!

Us by a portion of a sheet of finished copper. It was a beautiful piece of metal.
When the 2002 Olympics were held in Salt Lake City, the metal for all of the medals came from this mine. I think my favorite part of the day was reading about the Olympic medals. It was really neat!
Overall it was a fun trip to the mine, and a worthwhile experience. Which we ended by taking a picnic to the Oquirrh Mountain Temple grounds, and enjoying some time there.
